G'day Mates!

After (LITERALLY) planes, trains and automobiles today- I have arrived safely in Newcastle!

The flight from LAX --> SYD was AMAZING!!!! When we boarded, there was rap music playing and multi-colored lights, and music videos. I sat next to a 25-year-old Australian guy named Pete. He was really fun and helpful. Each one of our seats had a TV on the back of it which had free games, movies, music, TV shows and a built in GPS that showed you our current location, the plane's speed, how much longer in time and miles we had and also our elevation. It was really awesome! They served chicken curry with rice for dinner (with a ton of other side dishes). Everyone got 2 free drinks, so after 2 Chardonnays and some NyQuil, I was out for the next few hours. When I woke up we had breakfast and landed in Sydney. A couple cool things about the plane were that the lights inside, matched the sky tone outside. (Example: When the sun was rising, the inside lights were pink and orange; when it was dark out, the interior was navy blue and gold). The bathrooms were spacious and had full-length body mirrors. In 15 hours, I only got up once to walk around. That probably wasn't the best idea... The rest of my time was spent on the seat's entertainment unit. I was REALLY impressed. Oh- and the flight attendants were not like anything I had seen before, they were fun, chatty and hilarious. If I ever come back to Australia, I definitely would fly with VAustralia again.

ANYWAY......

I boarded this train outside the Sydney Kingsford International Terminal right after I got into town. It was PACKED with people- none of which seemed to know English. Good thing I was only on it for about 20 minutes before I switched lines.
Once I arrived at Central Station, I switched trains to the Newcastle track. The ride from Sydney to Newcastle was just about 3 hours. This second train had barley any people on it, which was nice.

Here's a picture of my new, PRETTY, Australian money! I don't have all of the bills yet, but this is a good start. The gold coin is worth 2 dollars and the silver coin is worth 1 dollar.

These are some pictures I took on my journey from Sydney to Newcastle out the train window. There were lush trees and plants everywhere and colorful houses. Great views from every angle!

Once I arrived in Newcastle, I had someone from the University come and pick me up and bring me to my dorm (where I am now). Haven't met anyone yet but there are definitely a lot of people living here. Tonight I plan to set up my room and check out campus...if I can manage to stay awake. My window overlooks this amazing view- you can see tree tops for miles! There are really noisy Australian birds outside of my window, I'll try and get a picture!
I'm so excited to be here, although EXTREMELY jet lagged! I'll post pictures of my dorm, campus and room once I get everything set up. I dont have a cell phone yet but hope to get one soon. I cant wait to see what this city has in store for me!
I love you all back home and I'll talk to you guys soon!

P.S. Why did no one tell my Australia was this humid? The humidity is almost unbearable!!! Ahhhh I'm dying!

1 Flight Down, 1 To Go!

Hey everyone!!!! I'm sitting in the International terminal at LAX waiting to board my Sydney-bound flight! I couldn't be more excited!!! I finally got all 70 pounds of my luggage together this morning and took off! I got a little sad while I was flying away from Arizona, but I know good things are coming!

0 days left on my loooooooong Australian rip-off date countdown! It'll be weird not waking up and ripping another day off tomorrow. It's finally here!

The flight from PHX to LAX was awesome! There were only 30 people on my plane....TOTAL. Thirty. Yeah- crazy. I was early to board and had my own 3-seats in the emergency exit row! I spread out and FULLY took advantage of that! The interior of the plane was decked out in Valentine's Day decorations, which was fun. There were 4 flight attendants for 30 people so we got plenty of attention! Here are some pictures of my plane, Dad, Betty and myself before I left Scottsdale:

So after that flight, I got off and went down to baggage claim and got my bags. Then I asked someone how to get to my next terminal and they told me to WALK. Baaaaaaaad, bad, bad idea. It was really far. Hahah. Anyway, VAustralia's check in counter area was incredible! It was dark with mood lighting and had techno music playing... I couldn't believe it. The person helping me check in had the strongest Australian accent and it really amped me up to leave! I blew through security and customs in a breeze! So simple- all I did was show my passport and they never asked anything about my visa or luggage or ANYTHING.

Anyway, I'll be here waiting until 7:30pm California time to board my plane. There's not much to do in this area because it's all high security. I'm just getting so anxious to get there already!!!! I'll write back after the flight! I love and miss you all so much !

P.S. You better thank me for writing this- it's costing me $15 bucks per hour. I'm desperate- sorry.

An hour and a half til take-off!!!! WOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

Getting Ready for the Party...

Before I start- let me just apologize for the quality of these 2 pictures. I uploaded them straight from my camera phone so they're pretty grainy. Anyway- my going away/birthday party is in 4 days and we've been doing a lot to prepare. Here's some of the stuff we've come up with... Here's the party menu for the barbeque! Cheeseburgers, Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and of course- shrimp on the barbie!
So this is the poster I drew free-hand! Everyone who's coming has their name on one of those yellow sticky tabs and it's a game called "Pin the Tail on the City"...closest one to put their name to Newcastle is the winner! I know it's a little juvenile but it's hilarious how little people know about geography! So it should be fun! :)
6 days til take off!!

On-Campus Housing

Sooooo, does anyone else think it's really ridiculous how RIGHT after I was denied housing, and booked my flight and hostel- a spot in the dorms magically opened up for me?

I'm still leaving on Feb. 14th but now have a room reserved in Edwards Hall. I'm going to take those 2 extra weeks I had reserved for house-hunting a travel.

I'm thinking I'll go down south and take over Sydney first. Sweeeeeeet.

23 days until take off!!!

All Set!

So, my plane ticket was booked last night. I'm leaving on Valentine's Day and coming back to the states on July 1st. Its a 14 hr 55 min plane ride there (15 hours on a plane? Shoot me....) and a 13 hour ride home!

I booked my hostel today. As some of you know, I was denied on-campus housing, so I'll be living at the YHA hostel on Newcastle Beach for 10 days as I look for a place to live.

I had to call internationally tonight to work something out, and while I was on the phone, I got called a sheila by a REAL Australian. Haha! This is going to be GREAT! Cant wait, cant wait, cant wait!!!!

Hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas!

T-minus 7 weeks til take off!

Love, LP
